I came across a very moving editorial on a market site for writers, Spicy Green Iguana. I doubt the author will mind it getting as much exposure as possible:
September 2001
Iguana Editorial
Volume 4, Number 9, W#35
A Special Editorial by Natalie Somere
Living Scared as an American: Stopping the Violence and Misplaced Blame
I am writing this in lieu of the horrific tragedy that happened on Tuesday. I am writing this as an American as well as a Middle Easterner who happens to be Muslim. I am writing you this because I love this country and I am scared, angry and above all, feeling helpless. I have just returned from an average trip to the store, except that this trip was anything but average. I was confronted for being "different" and felt unsafe for the first time in this country that I consider home. I managed to leave the situation without being physically hurt, but I am emotionally more distraught now than I was even before.
I am writing this to you not to get your empathy, but to help you understand what is happening right now to innocent people in your own neighborhood. I am writing this because I REFUSE to allow these COWARDS who harmed our country's comfort level last Tuesday to win. I am writing this on behalf of the over 7-million Muslim people who live in this beautiful land peacefully and who want the safety that every one of our ancestors came to America to find. We are your friends, your neighbors, your teachers, your doctors. We are a country who sets examples, and we are a country which takes pride in setting standards for democracy, tolerance and freedom. Let's not allow more innocent lives to be taken, or brutalized due to any more ignorant acts. Let's stand together and show the world we are a country that won't allow ourselves to be destroyed and won't allow any more ignorance to breed any more ignorance. God Bless America.

The terrorists who carried out the Sept. 11 attack are not monsters, nor are they animals. The sad truth is they are human beings. Human beings of the lowest character, but human beings all the same. Life where they come from is cheap. Most of them eat sleep and breathe war. We can not even begin to understand their way of life in the same way they cannot seem to stomach ours. I'm very angry and full of sorrow and I hope those who helped to plan this attack are dealt with properly. I would just hate to see more wholesale slaughter of the innocent.

yikes! the results are downright eerie... and I was again trying to do HTML the way I learned it in DCHAT. I don't remember if quotes were a part of it or not though. But I used to post wingdings now and then. Of course I have to blame Mr. Charlie cuz he started it and then taught me*s*...
- Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 21:16:40 (EDT)
You know, if I had read the "HTML tips" earlier that I myself wrote months ago, I would have gotten it right the first time? Of course, at least one other person besides me failed to read the tips. So I don't feel too bad.

The Pentagon has 5 sides, there were 4 planes, and twin towers. 5+4+2=11 (or is that stretching?)
- Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 10:22:32 (EDT)
Flight 77 had 64 people on board not 65
Numbers for all 4 planes, according to CNN.com
Flight 11: Crew - 11, Passengers - 81
Flight 175: Crew - 9, Passengers - 56
Flight 93: Crew - 7, Passengers - 38
Flight 77: Crew - 6, Passengers - 58
Total: Crew - 33, Passengers - 233
11s:
Flight 11: Flight #, 11 crew
Flight 175: 56 passengers, 65 total people
Flight 93: 38 passengers
and: Currently 74 Army personnel are unaccounted for from the Pentagon
(and 10 civilians)
What I don't know is if when CNN says flight 77 had 64 people on board, whether they're counting the terrorists or not.

What was he thinking?
A manager at a Starbucks plant near Seattle Washington made what probably was the stupidest decision of his career. (I hope he hasn't made any decisions more stupid.)
He gave a worker a demerit for each of three days he missed work -- because the employee got stranded in Texas on Sept 11.

The night before Sept 11,before falling asleep, I read something that went like this: "this is a vision i have: a city, grey and dull, break into pieces and litterally fall to the ground like dust. From its remains, a new city rises, shimmering ..wearing all the colors of the rainbow". Aint that quite a coinsidence?

- Friday, September 21, 2001 at 15:59:33 (EDT)
The Camp David Accords were signed on Sept 17th. However, ground was broken on the Pentagon on Sept 11, 1941 .. 60 years to the day. So that can be added to the list.
- Friday, September 21, 2001 at 13:22:16 (EDT)
That '11' list scared me, too. More scary for me this morning [do you lot know about this, yet?] was hearing that it is 100% likely Britain is next on the terrorists' list. Hate me for this if you must but I have MORE emotional reaction to a threat here than I did or do to any threat over with you. Nostradamus had me shitting myself through 1993-1999. I saw 1999 come and go and shunned Nostradamus as a propoganda hyper. Now war looms 'again' to dominate my thoughts. My Dad's life goes from being 1000, 000, 000% important to several more 0's worth. Sarah starts Uni' on Sunday. What sort of life is she gonna have there with war surrounding her? I feared for you, my Tribalsoulkitchen friends and comrades on the 11th. Now, I just Fear.
My speech about 2001 and 2053 and 2113 seems like it was written a year ago. In one day, it has become irrelevant to me.
Help me...
- Friday, September 21, 2001 at 11:06:18 (EDT)
I have chills on top of chills looking at that #11 list. Did you put this together yourself or find it somewhere? It's mind boggling... And I know what you mean by feeling changed forever. I experienced the fear of WW3 as a child. Wondered why the Russian Premier hated us enough to promise "We will bury you". We did "duck and cover" drills at school and trembled when planes flew over. Still, we saw it w/a child's eyes and felt like our parents and our Pesident would keep us safe when it came right down to it. Then President Kennedy was killed and it got more real... and I saw Oswald shot on live TV with my own eyes. I think I left my childhood behind that day. And I've been marking time and watching ever since, remembering the things my father told me about WW2...and my ambivalence about Vietnam. "The battle line's being drawn. Nobody's right if everybody's wrong." and "Paranoia strikes deep. Into your life it will creep. Starts when you're always afraid.." (Buffalo Springfield "For What It's Worth")
- Friday, September 21, 2001 at 05:50:43 (EDT)
It is good to be optimistic and I hope you are right that we will learn from this. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later. All I know is that I've had this constant knot in the pit of my stomach that just won't go away. It gets worse at night while I'm lying in bed, thinking too much. I fear that we haven't seen the last of these attacks yet. What if the next time the weapon of choice turns out to be a suitcase sized nuclear weapon, or a biological or chemical weapon? I'm not worried about myself, because I believe whole heartedly in an afterlife..an afterlife where we must deal with the choices we made in life so that we may grow and learn from them, but I don't believe in a hell. My biggest fear in all of this is for all the children. My heart cannot take watching any child suffer. I'm sorry if I sound so pessimistic right now. It's going to take some time for most of us to heal...and lots and lots of prayers.
- Friday, September 21, 2001 at 00:19:16 (EDT)
Here are some numbers for you to think about:
The date of the attack: 9/11 - 9 + 1 + 1 = 11
September 11th is the 254th day of the year: 2 + 5 + 4 = 11
After September 11th there are 111 days left to the end of the year.
119 is the area code to Iraq/Iran. 1 + 1 + 9 = 11
Twin Towers - standing side by side, look like the number 11
The first plane to hit the towers was Flight 11
State of New York - The 11th State added to the Union
New York City - 11 Letters
Afghanistan - 11 Letters
The Pentagon - 11 Letters
Ramzi Yousef - 11 Letters (convicted of orchestrating the attack on the WTC in 1993)
Flight 11 - 92 on board - 9 + 2 = 11
Flight 77 - 65 on board - 6 + 5 = 11
Also heard that the Camp David Accord between
Israel and Egypt were signed on 9-11.
- Thursday, September 20, 2001 at 23:54:37 (EDT)
Those pictures effect even me. I'd like to add to your statement that we WILL learn from this. After one more war, we will eventually unite as a United Earth [even if Australia holds out a while], and our society becomes very peaceful. No war, discrimination, poverty or disease.
Although history is a circle, allowing the future to be written, it is still not stone. We CAN shape our future for the better. Let's not have WWIII. Not in 2001 OR 2053. Let's bring our World Government ahead, for 2113 is way too far still. Let's take what happened in the U.S. and learn. If you/we are to punish someone, be ASSURED he/she/it is guilty. Then act rationally. This is the C21. We ARE evolved. Okay, so some dicks kill other Humans. This century we say bye to the Bearded Lizard, the Humpback Whale and the Rhinoceros. Let's not wipe out ourselves. WE are not terrorists. WE are not genocide supporters. We are not Adolf Hitlers or Saddam Husseins or Khan Noonien Singhs or Edward Greens. We are mature. You are Americans. We are evolved. Let's prove it.
- Thursday, September 20, 2001 at 16:22:42 (EDT)
I thought I would share some of the images I've found. A picture is worth a thousand words, and I think these pictures express the various feelings people are dealing with right now. I know I will never be the same again. We Americans have been fortunate not to have experienced anything like this up until now. It really opens your eyes as to how ugly the world can be sometimes. I believe that the majority of people in this world are good and decent people, and maybe that is why it is so shocking when we witness the darkside of humanity. It depresses me when I think of how cruel we can be to one another. It seems there are no limits to the pain and torture we are capable of inflicting on one another. From the dawn of mankind on up to modern times, humans have committed the worst atrocities imaginable, and I don't hold out much hope for us ever learning anything from it. I've seen this tragedy bring out the best in us as well, but why do we wait until some horrific event occurs to stop and help each other? To let others know how much we love them? It would be nice if we could use all of our technology for good, but we just keep building bigger and better weapons of destruction. Hatred and revenge seems to be a rampant disease for which there is no cure. I only hope that we don't get ourselves into a war for the sake of revenge. We will not win. I'm not altogether convinced that bin Laden is even the person who is actually responsible for this attack. I fear that he is just another pasty our government is using to satisfy our need to "get someone". Sorry for the long rambling. I just need to get some of this off my chest. Peace and love to all. I will never give up though that one day acts like this will be a thing of the past..for without hope..what's the point of living?

The pic of Lady Liberty was taken by my son on his visit to NYC on New Year's Eve 1999. He also took pics of the WTC, including one of himself on the top observation deck. If I could convince myself this was all one horrific fantasy, and remove myself from it and enter a "real" world where this wasn't happening - it would be tempting. But I am unable to convince myself of that.
I don't really have two "cyberidentities" even though I sign some posts "Gavroche" and others "John" I just sometimes use my real name, and sometimes use my "screen name". Gavroche hasn't developed into a full-fledged separate identity, yet.
I know several people though who do have multiple identities, so don't worry, Christopher, I am not confused, and understand that you're not wallowing in fantasy.
- Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at 11:23:46 (EDT)
I don't want you to think that I'm wallowing in 'fantasy' in order to cope with writing to you all. I'm not. I just know that nothing I could say would make this better.
www.bolt.com shows some have concocted poetry to help. I haven't the creative streak just now.
I love you.

At few other times in my life have I wished I was Stripey. He can lift much more than nearly any other known hero.
His X-ray vision can penetrate further. His teleportational abilities exceed more than those of other heroes. And what I'm saying is that I like 'using' Stripey as my cyberidentity BECAUSE he's capable of so much. And I am stuck here - denied via finance and aeroplane-restriction from helping any of you.
I don't know if C.N.N. or your other newsstations have mentioned the rest of Earth, but trust me, Britain is just as horrified and speechless as you are - and we DO have...similar...events in our past. The I.R.A. blew up Manchester less than ten years ago. Other events escape me.
I am there with you in some form.

off-hand I can't think of any Soulkitchen regulars living in New York or DC. The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was enroute from Chicago to New York which suggests the possibility a pilot or passenger prevented it from being used in the attack. Not much strategic where it crashed.
St. Louis is sometimes mentioned as a possible location for a terrorist attack -- primarily since it is nearby Scott Air Force Base in Belleville IL, and the headquarters for McDonald Douglass/Boeing (I think after the merger the main headquarters may have moved, but there are still operations here)
I'm okay as of now...but shaken.

"The military establishment".
Define!
The police? - Wankers [okay, so my opinion here is Vanessa's opinion, not mine, but everyone agrees with me...]
Army - no opinion
F.B.I. - role model for Section 31. Hate them.
The Navy - VERY VERY cool. Precursor to Starfleet.

When I was seven years old, I was once reprimanded by my mother for an act of collective brutality in which I had been involved at school. A group of seven-year-olds had been teasing and tormenting a six-year-old. "It is always so," my mother said. "You do things together which not one of you would think of doing alone." ...
Wherever one looks in the world of human organization, collective
responsibility brings a lowering of moral standards. The military
establishment is an extreme case, an organization which seems to have been expressly designed to make it possible for people to do things together which nobody in his right mind would do alone.

It was good to see bestiality. Frances and I never found anything "disgusting" about our sex and if I ever fall in love with another Humanoid in the future...
