Numerous Pink Floyd
"in concert" videotapes wink, blink, and even PULSEate at you from
store shelves...
But PinkMovie.Com
(from Make Big Pink Laugh Productions) ain't no such animal!
It's a rockumentary
with a crew side view of touring the world
with one of the most
influential bands in Rock n Roll history:
The legendary Pink
Floyd.
Bob Hickey (soundmixer for
an impressive list of music's well
knowns) has packaged his
experiences, using "laugh your ass off-
The-Wall" humor from the
backside of the moon! Covering his stint with the 1987/1988
Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour, he vividly illustrates the trials,
tribulations, and flat out fun of "the roadie".
You betcha' these guys earn
their paychecks... Bob's own
initiative and 8mm Sony
V9 HandyCam-Pro was used to detail the hectic arrivals/departures at airports
and hotels, meals and
meetings. And, most importantly,
it depicts the precision and
muscle groaning work involved
in setting up the entire framework of each concert, testing and maintaining
equipment throughout,
then dismantling it all
when it's time to move on to the next gig.
The camera's eye records
scenic wonders en route. One gets the
feeling of constant motion
and an urgency to capture, hold, and
savor fleeting priceless
"once in a lifetime" events. Many hours
of footage were pared and
edited, then spiced with occasional
dubbed-in backround music
and special effects. I especially
enjoyed the collaged vignettes
accompanied by the aural
stimulation of Hendrix's
"Voodoo Child".
Narration mainly takes the
form of Bob Hickey's down home "I'm
from Texas" drawl-- Know
whuta' mean? *GRIN* Stalking fellow crew members engaged in work or play,
the resulting conversation is spontaneous and earthy, sometimes prompting
him to hand over the camera and take his turn in front of
it.
Very few areas are off limits.
We are witness to the projects that fall smoothly into place...alongside
the inevitable mishaps,mix-ups, and injuries. Musicians and "techies" will
appreciate the close up demonstrations of the equipment's inner workings
and countless soundchecks. In contrast are the pre-concert crowd scenes,
complete with Floyd fan interviews and hysterically unabashed "chick ogling".
These sequences focus on New Zealand and Australia, but my favorite fan
interaction occurs in Japan, where enthusiasm was literally
dancin' in the streets!
There are but a few scant
peeks at members of the band, yet their unseen presence was much like the
shivery anticipation of waiting for a concert to begin. And watching this
tape accomplished a
deed of no small significance--
It whetted my appetite for more.
I can't resist adding more
Pink Floyd concert tapes to my video
library. My passion for
the band had waned in recent years,
nestled discreetly within
furrowed tunnels of my subconscious,
where synaptic impulses
still hop, skip, and jump through pink
pig galaxies...
Mr Hickey has done Pink
Floyd a great service with his self-proclaimed "humble project". At present,
you can order PinkMovie.Com via his website, where you can check out pre-view
clips. Click
here. The site is a "must-see"for Doors fans, as well as Floyd fanatics...
There, you'll be treated to the visual results of Bob's trip to Pere-Lachaise.
