Love Is But a Song We Sing

Below is the latest email newsletter from Jesse Colin Young's website. His music had an incredible influence on the public conscience in general during the turmoil of the 60's, and his personal life backed up the messages put forth in his lyrics. I plan a future in-depth article on this man's career and its impact, both past and present.

In the meantime, give his website a look-see. A few surprises await...

Aloha from Da Farm!

Just returned from Santa Rosa where the Youngbloods and my sons played together for the first time. We played a show for the California Parenting Institute. I think they thought it was a natural match being a fathers and sons band. It was a wonderful show. Lots of the new material from the forth coming "New Blood" cd with my sons that will be available here at the website in about 6 weeks. And lots of classic tunes too from the 'Bloods. Jerry Corbitt was there to sing "Grizzly Bear" and "Euphoria" and play his 12 string in that crazy Corbitt ragtime style. It was a joy to have Banana with me again on organ and to perform one of his new songs with him on slide. And of course with Cheyenne Young on bass and Ethan Turner, my godson, on drums, the rhythm section was "kicking it"! My wife Connie thinks it appropriate for the young men to be kickin' their "dads" along. I have to agree. Feels good!

My sons and I will start touring on May 25 at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley and continue on from there. We'll go all the way to the East Coast and then come back to Oregon and Seattle on July 4th thru 7th. Banana may join us for some of the West Coast dates and Corbitt will be there on the 26th of June at the Lancaster, CA Performing Arts Center. He lives nearby in the high desert and loves it. I'll post all the dates here on the website when the tour is complete next month.

It is wonderful for me to come full circle and play music with all these men. What a treat and what a blessing. Stay tuned for the next episode of Dads and Sons Rock Out!

All my best to all of you..........Jesse

Aloha,

Some of you know that I've been working on a cd with my sons since last fall. This January as I listened to some of the rough mixes with my engineer Chris Manning, I began to feel that something was missing. And I think that something is the other 2 Youngbloods, Jerry Corbitt and Banana. We have kept in touch over the years but we have all gone our separate musical ways; Jerry into country music and Banana playing everything from bluegrass to the blues.

The Youngbloods disbanded in 1971. Jerry left the band in 1969 at the beginning of the recording of Elephant Mountain so most of the folks who saw us during our success with "Get Together" saw us as a trio with drummer Joe Bauer. Joe died of a brain tumor more than a decade ago leaving the three of us to carry on. We had a brief reunion in 1985 and tried to do some new music but we couldn't see eye to eye. So here we are in the spring of 2000 and I'm imagining Banana's organ chops on my new music and Jerry's harmonies and harmonica too. They are both currently working on my tapes and we hope to finish sometime this summer. We had our first jam session of the new millennium in March and both Jerry and Banana came to my gig in Santa Rosa at the Parenting Expo and sat in with me and my sons. It's quite a band. Two generations of musicians playing side by side as peers. It feels great to be in the middle of all this music!
